Satin Braidout

After the failed curl attempted on Sunday I decided to give the satin braidout a trial. I didn't have two satin scarves to use so I attempted to improvise and used the belts from two of my satin robes. But that didn't work.

So then I decided to just do a braid-out with 3 plaits/braids. One in the back and two in the front - one on each side. That worked a little better.

Braid-out
To achieve this look (on flat-ironed hair)
  • Separate hair into three sections - 1 in the back an one on each side in the front
  • Apply product of chioice - I used SheaMoisture Curl Enhacing Smoothie
  • Braid quickly after applying product because the hair will start to poof is left loose for too long
  • Let the hair dry or sleep with hair braided overnight
  • Release the braids and fluff until all the hair is blended well and the parts are not visible

Since I have been struggling with keep my hair out and down - this 'do ended up in a bun by Noon.

Flat Twistout w/ 2 Braids

You get it first...

This is a style I wore to the CurlyNikki gathering a while back. I got a few questions on how I maintained the look and this is how.

The flat twists were done on dry hair that was an old twist-out. The older the twist-out the more stretched out the look.

This look was originally done on freshly washed hair but as the days passed the look got a little messy and this video basically demonstrates the steps I took to refresh the style.

To achieve/refresh this style:
1. Create two plaits/braids in the front
2. Separate the rest of the hair into easy to work with sections
3. Using a water-based product, flat twist from the crown to the nape (this will encourage length with the look)
4. When hair is 100% dry remove the twist (apply oil if desired) and fluff until you are happy with the look

Edit: The error with the video not playing should be resolved. If it does not play for you please let me know

A night out with an old twist out

When you have old hair, a busy day, and plans later that night - trying to figure out something to do your hair can be stressful.

It just so happens that two days before I watched a YT video on a Quick and Easy Saturday Night Updo...and I must say, it was very quick and very easy.

The style was done on a 3 day old twist out that was on it's last leg - seriously it was BAD.

I did not apply any product to my hair prior to styling and the only tools used were my hands, a brush, and a hairzing.

For smoother edges you can gel & brush - then tie them down. I opted to go with just a brush because I didn't want the style to look like an attempt at neatness - I prefer messy looks when my hair is out.

I got a few compliments that night so this will definitely be a "go to" look for those days/nights when I have little to no time to do my hair for an event.

Tip: Nail Polish Drying

I thought this was really worth sharing. I love painting my nails and I get extremely irritated when I mess them up because of time constraints that don't allow me to let them dry 100%.

Great Twistout Tutorial

Recently I watched this video by Naptural85Ultra Defined Twist Out Tutorial No Heat Curls. The technique she used was so simple and I love the way she always delicately handles her hair.

The definition from her twists was amazing and lasted for more than one day. I can't wait to give this a try.

I hope someone finds this helpful and be sure to check out her other vids (I love her channel).

[Highly Requested] Updo Style

Styling Steps:
Hair has been freshly washed, conditioned, and a leave-in conditioner was applied.
Separate the hair into the two major sections that will be cornrowed
Cornrow the back section from ear to ear. The thickness of the cornrows is up to you.
(optional) Two strand twist the loose hair after the cornrow is complete
The final cornrow that will go from ear to ear will start at the front of the hair line and end just above the ear.
The cornrows in the front will go from front to back. Thickness is up to you.
Once all the hair is braided and twisted just pin the twists in place for a lasting protective style

This look has options. You can pin the twists up for a protective style or take them down and let them hang for a more fun style.

Tips:
* Keep a spray bottle close so that if hair starts to dry while styling you can quickly re-wet that section
*Using a leave-in/or hair cream in each section will give the hair slip and help the hair slide easily as you braid.

Bun Tutorial

Some geographic areas are cooling down faster than others so there are some of us that are already implementing our Fall/Winter hair regimens. I have not started my Fall/Winter hair regimen yet - it was 80 today :) however the humidity and the dew points are dropping so I will be starting soon.

Many Fall/Winter hair regimens consist of protective styles and last year my favorite protective style became the bun. This is how I do my buns:

To change it up (and prevent breakage) I like to move the position of the bun or include some cornrows in the front.

Happy bunning!

Commercials used to be motivational

After seeing this commercial on the Soul Train documentary aired on Vh1 this weekend I had to share:

What happened to the days when commercials made us feel good about who we are?

I'm not going to post it, but there is one in particular that really irks me. Basically the lady in the commercial states how she can't feel good if her hair doesn't look good and it only looks good when it's bone straight. **kanye shrug**

I would love to see Marcus Garvey or Sojourner Truth or Harriet Tubman "star" in a hair commercial...a girl can dream.

Preparing for Afro Independence Day

If this will be your first time styling your hair into a real afro it can be a frustrating process - well it was for me the very first time.

My problem is that my hair is so soft that it does not want to hold the afro shape. If I try to make and afro by just picking it out, it will fall. Kinda resembles Leela James' hair - not that I mind because her hair is beautiful but when I want a 'fro, I want a fro.

I put together a quick tutorial that shows the steps I go through to form and shape my fro and it all starts with two strand twists.

1. Wash, condition, and apply a leave-in conditioner.

2. Twist hair in sections that have been detangled very well. Overall I had about 18 two strand twist. If I am not leaving the house I will do less, about 6-10.

3. Steps 1 and 2 are typically done the day or night before step 3. Once hair is dry carefully untwist each twist and finger comb.

4. After all twists are finger combed out use a pick or wide tooth comb to separate the hair even more. This is where care detangle becomes a very appreciated benefit. If your hair has been detangled probably you should be able to do this step without ripping out your hair. However, if you find this step a little difficult I would recommend continuing to style with your finger.

5. When making an afro shrinkage is my friend (honestly, I love shrinkage). I spray my hair with either plain water or an essential oil/water mix. Lately I have been using Care Free Curl/Water mix. I spray, shape, let dry. Because it's a light mist it only takes a few minutes to dry. I repeat this step until I am satisfied with the shape.

Happy Afro Independence Day!

I did my hair on Saturday afternoon...it is now Monday night and my hair is STILL soft and moisturized. I am so impressed!

I have not even spritzed my hair..... with anything!
