Hair Accessory Variety

On a recent trip to Walmart:

Some of these look so simple that I am going to try and make them - maybe save a few dollars. Since I make diaper cakes and jewelry I have all the supplies at home anyway. All I need some ideas.

If you are not a DIY person most of the accessories in the pictures ranged from $2-$5 and were very cute.

Product Review: Hair Stopper

This thing is saving the Earth!! I shed A LOT so after washing my hair is the shower the tub was always clogged. I used to purchase Drano like I purchased conditioner because I needed it just that much. One day while shopping in Walmart (for conditioner) I saw this product on the end of the aisle. For $3 I decided that I could give it a try.

I can honestly say that I am so glad I made this purchase. I have not used Drano since! Woot Woot!

The only downfall is that cleaning it grosses me out. Yea, it's my hair but still....yuck. So I like to let it dry completely and then remove the hair - in my mind it's less gross that way, LOL.

I like it and if something happens to it, I will buy it again.

In The News: Stereotyping and Style Choices

It appears this article came about from inspiration from an American Idol contestant, Crystal Bowersox (I haven't watched AI since the first season). The article talks about how dreadlocks are highly misunderstood and that people with them are frequently subjected to stereotyping.

From drug users to homeless or a gang-banger, will the stereotyping ever end?

"It's not dreadful. It's clean and beautiful," Michelle Robinson of Naturally Yours Salon in Oakland, CA.

Some history from the article:

Bob Marley and Whoopi Goldberg didn't invent dreadlocks. The hairstyle has been around for thousands of years. Here's a brief run through history:

ALONG THE NILE: The first known examples of dreadlocks date back to ancient Egypt, where images of the hairstyle appeared on various artifacts. It has been said that, when he died, King Tutankhamun was wearing dreadlocks.

RELIGIOUS PERSUASIONS: Several ascetic groups within major religions have embraced the hairstyle through the years, including the Nazarites of Judaism, the Sadhus of Hinduism and the Coptic monks of Christianity. The tresses that provided Sampson with all that strength? Dreadlocks.

THE RASTAFARI: For a Rasta, dreadlocks are an expression of inner spirituality and an effort to live in accordance with the laws of nature. According to a Rastafarian proverb, "A man who cuts his hair is like a tree without leaves."

SLAVERY: Shackled slaves grew dreadlocks during the long trip from Africa to America. According to author Jeffery Bradley ("Don't Worry, Be Nappy"), the slave trader cut them off because they considered them "dreadful." Many blacks today wear the hairstyle as an expression of individuality and racial pride.

How to: Scalp Cleansing

I am so itchy! Usually I watch the clock at work count down until I can go home and relax - today, I want to go home and wash my hair. More specifically, my scalp!

First, I gathered my supplies. The bottles that the Carol's Daughter shampoo's come in are perfect for this. So even after the shampoo is used up I will be recycling the bottle for the purpose of scalp cleansing. I take the top from my Roots Only bottle and placed that on the bottle.

Then, I applied the shampoo directly to my scalp in sections to make sure I covered my entire scalp.

I have measure the amount of shampoo that is used for this technique and surprisingly less than 1oz is used.

Hair can be shampoo immediately after application or you can wait awhile. I had a few things to do and I needed to pre-poo so I left the shampoo on my scalp and applied a Jasmine Oil Castor Oil mix to the remaining length of my hair.

When washing I massage my scalp with my finger tips under running water....it feels so great! Let me know if you try it and what you think about it.

Sunday Style: Side Swept Afro

We overslept and missed church and when I say overslept....service starts at 11:15am and it takes us 35-40min to get there - we woke up at 11:00am. There was no way we would make it. So we spent the day together at the Farmer's Market and outside grilling. It was nice. After busy Saturday we needed a break.

At first I tried side combs to secure my hair - didn't work. Then I tried bobby pins - it looked ridiculous. After that, I got the idea to try a banana clip. I had serious doubts that it would work but I am glad to say I was wrong. Hubby really like this style and so did I, he even rounded (by patting) out my fro for me, LOL.
Inspiration:
I am constantly seeing this image on various hair forums, blogs, and Google searches. I have no idea where the original came from - if anyone knows please let me know.

Growth and Length Retention Gurus

Here are a few that (in my opinion) offer some great advice that has helped me on my journey:

Glamazini

What I like about these bloggers/vloggers is that they have pretty simple regimens and they have retained a head full of healthy length. Following the advice and guidance of these individuals has taken me from shoulder length to almost BSL. I am convinced these ladies know what they are doing because my hair's current length is the longest that it has ever been.

Accessorizing Your Hair

While waiting for our hair to grow or when still learning how to do more styles it is very easy to get bored with your signature look (or the only one you know how to do). When that boredom creeps in its time to spice things up a bit.

The first and easiest thing to do would be to go out and purchase some accessories for your hair. The choices seem to be endless.

Very Affordable Accessories:

However, as I look at these accessories I realize that I can make most of them. The best part about making your own accessories is that you can make the color you desire and and can usually make a few of them for the price of one in the store. So.....a continuation of this post will be about making your own accessories - the easy way.

BraidOut on Straight Hair

This was actually my first time doing a braid out on straight hair. I liked the waves and if I was so in need of a washing I would have worn this for a day or two.

for the love of coachella

who doesn't love coachella?
even if i haven't been to any of the coachella music festivals, i have this slight hint of what it is all about (thanks to martine cajucom who opened my eyes to coachella and the fab fashion it brings).
of course, who can miss the fashion in coachella?
it is one of the best things about coachella! the laid back, chillax look but with a certain je ne sais quoi (my fave look forever!) is the standard for any coachella outfit. and now that coachella has come to an end, it is time for judgment!

the best dressed individuals for me for 3 days no-fail would have to be
(drumroll please...)
Kate Bosworth and Whitney Port :) :) :)

like what i've said in my last entry, i love this acid washed dress on Kate. i think this is the winner out of all the coachella outfits!

i think this outfit is the "either you love it or hate it" outfit. as for me, it is LOVE!

i wish i can wear my lace top from abby soon! i love love love this whole look! exactly what i had in mind with my own lace top.

whitney doing the print-on-print trend. it is so dead on!

only Bosworth can make this crochet dress look chic instead of granny =)

i love the red against whitney's pale skin. i do wish she wore a different pair of shoes though.

and now here are other celebrities who brought it...
loving the DMs and the bright colored shoelace!

i love the whole bright yellow look but i find it too dressed up...or is it just paris??

head to toe flawless! i love the cropped top most especially :)

i don't understand why people are buzzing about kate hudson having a boob job because i don't think she did.

love the shoes and the hat :)

another head to toe flawless look from alessandra ambrosio. loving the floppy hat!

perfect romper and oxfords but i wish she accessorized and played with it more.

that belt bag is AWESOME!

loving the turquoise!

admit it, brandon boyd is sexy whatever he wears.

not loving kelly's look so much but i love luke worall's whole look...that shirt is awesome!

i love that top on you, kim!

now i want a denim romper too!

this is how you make a clubbin' outfit look like a coachella-appropriate outfit.

would've expected so much more from alexa...this is too safe.

oh kellan lutz, you are a PLAY boy!

Kristen, you make me question myself sometimes. LOL!

LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! i would wear this dress.

loving that hat, jay-z.

another print-on-print look...rockin' it, i must say.

oh rachel bilson, you are too cute.

by now, kristin have mastered that sunny california girl style.

THANK YOU MISCHA FOR COMING AROUND! HALLELUJAH!!!

i've always been a fan of off shoulder tops. i think it's HAWT!

another fave of the season: the peek-a-boo top

can hardly see Zooey's outfit but she sure looks like she's having fun!

okay, i'm jealous and oh, i want vanessa's floppy hat!

and here are some random people who are chic in their own little world too...
this season is all about the floral. loving it on her with the braided belt!

are those sequined shorts?

bringing jumper back, i like :)

so classy! love the shoes, the ruffled top and the hat! not sure about the skirt though. would've been better with shorts if you ask me.

cute headband, shorts and shoes. loving the cream!

another head to toe flawless look! i love the oversized vest so much!

can't get enough of rompers!

oh!!!! love love love the tank dress!

another print-on-print look. i want to try this one time.

THE MOST PERFECT ROMPER EVAHRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

awesome boots, girly :)

cropped top is love.

THAT'S IT FOR NOW!
TILL NEXT YEAR'S COACHELLA!
