In The News: More black women finding beauty in natural hair

BY DEB GRUVER

The Wichita Eagle

This article says so much that many of us know and have heard before. It makes me kinda sad to know that there are young girls out there that are afraid to live with what God gave them because "people" won't accept it. Like I always say "People don't have a heaven or hell to put you in" so don't worry about what they say or how they feel.

I would love to see more article out there like this. Read it, enjoy it, and share it!

shake it like a polaroid

tank top from robinson's department store. Space white shorts. Possibility at the Ramp gladiator heels. thrifted sleveless trench. DIY studded belt and layered necklace. cocktail ring from an accessory store.

i'm never really a tank top with shorts type of gal. i just think that it's so normal and expected...and you know me, i don't like that although there is really no harm in trying, yeah? :)

i bought the chains from an accessory store and altered the lengths of each to make it into a layered necklace but i still find it too skinny for my taste so i have to go back to that store and get more chains for a funkier look. i do love my new cocktail ring too :)

so, i am reading eat pray love as i've told you in a past entry and the pivotal question there is:
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO?

since reading this book, i looked inside of me too and asked myself the same question. if you are single, you tend to think more of yourself and believe that you can do anything and everything now. so, here are some things i want to do:
* i want to travel alone in a place wherein i do not know anyone and i do not know exactly where to go. (i wanted to do this 3 years ago but love came my way and i just know that you can never do those things when you are with someone.)
* i want to go to the beach alone...in a desserted island with no cell phones and wi-fi, finish reading eat pray love while getting a tan.
* i want to study styling and sewing in FIP or somewhere in Paris maybe ( i was supposed to enroll myself to FIP this year but something came up and i will not be able to support myself as of the moment. yes, i will pay for my own tuition.)
* i want to go surfing in Hawaii or in Capetown, South Africa.
* i want to learn how to cook preferably italian ala-Giada De Laurentiis although i love barefoot contessa too.
* i want to be a full-time yoga devotee. ( i do yoga but i want to be better and a devout)
* i want a chanel bag before i get married (and buy diapers, milk, etc.)
* i want to bungee jump in macau.
* i want to join habitat for humanity or PETA.
* i want to live in tuscany or in greece.
* i want to have a stronger faith ( i want a spiritual adviser too!)

those are the things i want to do for now.....the list will probably accumulate later on in my life. yes, i can never be fully satisfied...i am human afterall :)

one of the most important passages in this book talks about how to be closer to God while still wanting earthly things, it says:

"To find the balance you want, this is what you must become. You must keep your feet grounded so firmly on the earth that its like you have four legs, instead of two. That way, you can stay in the world. But you must stop thinking at the world through your head. You must look through your heart, instead. That way, you will know God."

how about you? WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO?

Buns

Here are a few more bunning options that I did not previously post:

Still keeping my hair off my shoulders to prevent breakage and maintain length.

i know some of you do not like the olsen twins because you think they are bad influences and are skinny. although did you guys forget that these two are multi-billion empires in the fashion world? so no matter what you say, i love the olsen twins! i think they are fabulous, elusive and nonchalant. they are not afraid to be different or be in the worst look of the week. i feel like they are the epitome of the saying, "dress to express and not to impress." tell me if you know someone else like that.

Roller Setting

I decided that since I had a little extra time with the holiday weekend to attempt my first roller set. I read on one of those hair blogs/websites that when roller setting 4abc hair, it was impossible to get smooth curls. That is my problem with the internet..you have people that have never touched your hair telling you what it can and can not do. I have had my hair long enough to know what is possible and what's not. I am here to declare that smoothness can be achieve through roller setting on 4abc hair!

Supplies:
Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel
Sweet Almond oil
Spray Bottle with water/conditioner mix (for detangling)
Elastic Hair Bands
Annie Magnetic Hair Roller
Duck Bill Clips
Rat Tail Comb
Hair Brush (yep you read right)
Home Clips
Shea Butter/Coconut Oil Mix
Hair Dryer

I did my roller set on clean conditioned hair. First, I separated my hair into three sections with a column going down the middle. The column is where I started rolling. Using my rat tail comb I made smaller sections and used the hair clip to hold the rest of my hair back. For each section I detangled very well, applied Aloe Vera, and then sweet almond oil. (Note: Sweet almond oil was used because I like the shine that it gives my hair).

I used the hair brush to evenly distribute the gel and oil and also to smooth before rolling. If you detangle properly the brush will move through your length easily. I did not roll my hair straight down. I came in at an angle to encourage smoother roots. I used elastic bands for the curls within the interior of my hair but only rollers for the edges. I didn't want a lot of tension on my edges and I didn't want the indention from the band to show.

After I was all rolled up, which took about 45min-1hr(keep in mind this was my first time), I sat under the dryer until dry. If the hair is not completely dry, you will experience some reversion and frizziness, so be sure to do this on a day that you can sit for as long as needed. After removing roller wrap your hair until you are ready to take it down. I used the shea butter/coconut oil mix to apply to my curls prior to wrapping. This was an attempt to decrease frizzes.

I strongly believe that the trick to the roller set is to use a water based product that you know will give your hair some slickness and almost weigh it down. Since it's water based the weigh down will not matter because the product evaporates.

i always say that i am not a skirt or a dress person but lately i am falling so deep in love with skirts! however, i still love the soft + edgy look so i still like pairing skirts with tights, liquid leggings, boots, biker/bomber jacket, boyfriend blazers, studded belts and so on.

P.S.
i especially love the skirt in the last photo. how about you? :)
