RIP Jane Russell (1921-2001)

Another of the jewels of Old Hollywood is gone. But don't worry.
She's surely up in Heaven doing what she loved: looking at biceps.

Let's recap the glamour, shall we?

(Had to include the last one.
She's working those 3D glasses like they match the necklace.)

In case you're getting a case of the sads over Ms. Russell's passing, watch the clip below.
It'll make everything better, I promise.

You Asked...I Answered

This Q&A sessions excited me because both of the questions  below pertain to loc wearers and they both came in on the same day. A sign? Maybe :).  Let me make it clear that I am NOT AN EXPERT on loc care but I do care for my husbands locs so I have learned quite a lot with his journey. I hope the information below is helpful.

You Asked:

Need help,
I am in my early 50 and i am having problem with the top ofy my hair is very thin to be honest I am **** near bald at the top can you help me and please give me some advice I have been wearing locs for the past 4 years. help.

I answered:
When it comes to hair loss there are quite a few factors that you may want to look at to see if you can determine what is causing the problem. The most obvious and probably the first recommendation would be to visit a dermatologist. However, when I got to the loc portion of your email the first thing I thought was: twisting to tight. How often are you re-twisting your hair and when you retwist are there fingernails involved? Does the twisting hurt? Is heat involved?
Re-twisting to often can cause excess stress on your roots and contribute to breakage, jagged fingernails can tear those tiny hair strands to shreds. If your roots are re-twisted too tightly that could potentially  lead to traction alopecia and if you are sitting under a dryer after re-twisting then it possible that you could be experiencing some heat damage at the roots that is contributing to the breakage. As you can see there are a number of things that can play a part in breakage in the crown area.

Tia i see you do a lot of different things with your hair but I am wondering what are some new styles for men with locs? I use virgin coconut oil on my hair now but i'm looking for something new. Hair doesn't seem as healthy as it should. HELP A BROTHER OUT!!
I am really big on no longer using harmful chemicals in my hair. So this is what I shampoo my hair with Dr. Bronners tea tree oil shampoo or the peppermint. I use this product bc it's made with coconut oil, olive oil, hemp oil and it's light.
I mix pure Vitamin E with my coconut oil when i rub it in my hair and on my scalp. That's all I use. My hair is breaking so I started using this combo. I laid off the shea butter. I'm not sure if it's because I tie my hair up to have it out my face or just the hair isn't as healthy anymore....Thanks

I answered
In my opinion, finding the balance between protein and moisture is key in preventing breakage. There are quite a few natural products out there that can help you with reaching that balance. You mention that you are pulling your hair back to keep it out of your face, are you tying the locs together? Tying them together increases the potential that you will pull them too tight. Try wearing something like a loc soc to keep the hair out of your face. That will reduce the amount of strain that you put on each individual loc.
Some natural strengthening products you can use include black tea, coconut milk, henna (my fav), eggs, and many others.
As for styles - I hear the call and I will try my best to discover some new looks. Since my hubby has locs I may make this a regular feature on the blog. I have noticed a number of other ladies that have men with locs and we have to show them love too. :)

With both of these questions: If you have a signature look that requires you to manipulate the locs in the same way often, STOP. No matter your hair type (loc, straight, kinky, curly, etc) if you can constantly wearing your hair in the same way and tension is involved - breakage is likely to follow.

Fall/Winter - Week 16

Sunday
I co-washed, deep conditioned, and twisted my hair into an updo.

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
An updo is such easy maintenance that most of the care for the week consisted just keeping the hair moisturized.

Wednesday
I oiled my scalp with Castor oil and massaged as much as I could without causing too much frizz.

Friday
I took down the updo and washed my hair. I was so tired but so in need of a wash that simply shampooed and then went back to my old school technique of twisting my hair with Suave Tropical Coconut Conditioner.

Saturday
The weather was nice and I had some errands to run so I decided to have a little fun with my hair and wear it out:
The hair shot was perfect - facial expression not so much, LOL. I did this twist out using a method posted on YouTube by Naptural85. It was quick and easy.

Don't let the sunny and blue skies deceive you, it is still winter here in Calgary. Yup, I braved the cold once again to get these shots. You are looking at -28 degrees. My hands were freezing and my bum as well from not wearing gloves and wearing a shorty short skirt. Nonetheless, it is perfectly worth it cos I loved how the shots turned out. You'll be seeing more of these brightly-lit shots prolly when Spring is in full bloom. I am guessing that won't be anytime soon cos I looked at the weather for the next 14 days and it is still the same -10 to -30 awful coldness.

As if the cold isn't enough to make me gloomy, I had the most terrible weekend of my life. I was working last Saturday for my boss' mom when I suddenly felt nauseous after lunch. I thought it was only because I over ate (think steak, salad and sweet yam) but I kept coming back to the washroom vomiting like crazy. I rarely get sick so I told my boss that I cannot stay and work for another minute. My sweet boss drove me to the clinic instead of driving me home and I still stayed in the washroom for as long as I can remember suffering from diarrhea and nausea. The nurse had to put me into a room, let me lie down as I was holding to the pan (in case I feel the need to vomit and I'm telling you, I still did a couple of times in that room!!) like my dear life depended on it. It is true though, I never felt so sick in my entire life. I felt like my tummy was being punched over and over again. It was so painful I screamed a couple of times. Alas, the doctor came and said that I am suffering from Norovirus which is highly contagious and I must have possibly gotten it somewhere...anywhere, actually. I was advised to rest, go under liquid diet for two days and no dairy for the next 4-5 days.

I'm so sorry if that story made you guys sick out of your stomach but some people from twitter tweeted me that they had it too and it is really very horrible. I am still in bed nursing from that experience. I thought I was gonna die...the stomach cramps were that severe, I'm not exaggerating! All I've been drinking since yesterday was Gatorade although I did have asparagus soup today for lunch while watching No Strings Attached to kill my boredom. My tummy still acts up every now and then but not as terrible as last night. I haven't vomited too ever since I started taking the meds but I've been drowsy and sleeping like a baby cos of it. I feel gross and i've been imagining some greasy bad food like burger and fries as I eat my soup. On the brighter side, I do hope I loss some unwanted weight cos of this.

Okay, that's it for now. I better rest and eat asparagus soup with Gatorade...once again. Being sick sucks.

a dash of plaid, sequins and studs

I am writing from my bed, drinking a glass of soy milk and eating a bowl of noodles instead of cereal, just because the weather calls for it. Calgary's weather is just shitty cold again this week and from the looks of it, it will be going on until next week. All I can think about now is flying somewhere sunny like back to my country or Hawaii but since I can't possibly leave Canada for now, maybe BC is my best bet. I swear one day you'll just read from my twitter or from my facebook that I am in the airport, BC-bound purely out of impulse. I was in Anthropology yesterday with Amy and I read that people who are born on September 24 act on impulse and the irrational decisions they do are more right than when they are careful. So yeah, maybe I should just trust my instincts more and just go with it. After all, they always say that if it feels right then just go with it. I've never really been that spontaneous in my life although I do have my moments but I've always thought of myself as a planner. But lately with how the things are turning out, I just might really go where the waves would take me. Seems scary but what the heck, I am young, I am free, the sun still shines so the hell with it!

Anyway, here's what I wore last Friday when I went shopping with Dee. I know plaid is making a comeback this Spring and I just can't wait for all the snow to melt down, wear a romper and some clogs for a change! I am seriously getting tired of wearing tights and winter socks! I think I don't know how it feels not to have socks anymore...SERIOUSLY.

This week is just brutal because of last weekend's holiday. Work load is heavier than the usual and I am back to working out which is always hard when you've allowed yourself to rest and binge for a while. I am just looking forward to this steady weekend at home by my lonesome while I relive the crazy fun moments I've had from the last. Promise to share them with you on my next post! For now, I must lie in bed, watch Gossip Girl and sleep early. Ciao~

P.S.
I am disappointed with F21's nail polish.
It chips easily...just look at that whole pointing finger
nail without any polish on. Uggggggggh.
