Have you ever wondered while Rachel Zoe looks like that? Well, wonder no more! Heres a sneak peak into the life of a newborn stylist =)
In 2007, I had my first photo shoot. I was asked by Zander Angeles wife and Risque owner/designer Che Angeles through my cousin if I wanted to model. It was for a Cream Silk ad. I was reluctant so I just asked my cousin to look for pictures of me in my then still existent Friendster account and also gave Che my then starting multiply account. Not knowing what pictures they sent the client, I got a call the next day saying that I was one of the nine models chosen. The day of the photo shoot came and I was the last one to arrive since my cousin/driver-for-the-day was busy running errands. So, I waited for like 8 freakin hours (it was my fault though coz I was late)! Good thing I met a friend on the wayher name was Kay Panganiban and we clicked right away because we both love the beach and surfing =) We had our hair flat ironed a million times (we both have wavy hair) until all our hair are as straight and shiny as a horse. My eyebrows and my forehead were threaded and my make-up was exquisitely done. Now, all I had to do was wait and get paid.
I had my first taste of a photo shootas a model. I thought it was the hardest part but gawd, NOOOO!!!!
I had my first photo shoot yesterdayas a stylist. I didnt exactly knew I was a stylist until Chonx told me that shell be giving me copies of the magazine for my portfolio as Dang Faustino, stylist. I thought I was just pulling out clothes at Promod in Greenbelt 5 last Friday as a duty to the job I signed up for. Little did I know, when the day of the photo shoot came, I was the stylist pala! How stupid of me! I thought I was just helping the models dress up; match it with shoes and accessories (I have this dream na sana next time fashion editorial naman para masaya lalo un mga damit! Hehe). Well, Im not naman that nave, I know naman na it is the job of a stylist but I really didnt know Ill get the credit for it (Thank you so much, Chonx!).
Rachel Zoe said, It is not all glamour, and Im sure you did roll your eyes like me because you also thought that she was lying. Well, now, I know shes not lying. I know now why shes always stressed out and I also know now why shes so thin. I also know now why Taylor is always mainit ang ulo and why shes always being a pushy to Brad. Heres why
Pulling out clothes from a store was supposedly a blast. Well, it was naman. Its just that shempre the clothes are not for you tapos they have specifics pa like not too many prints, not too colorful, not too trendy etc. You have to follow what the client needs and NOT what you want. I think the hardest part in pulling out clothes is not being tempted to look around and shop. Newsflash: Im here for a job! I know now why Rachel Zoe is always saying, I DIE! Stylists are only allowed to salivate over borrowed clothes and not wear them. HAHAHA!
The day of the shoot, I had a lot of accessories in hand, pins, masking tape, sipit, tissue, powder basta everything I can possibly fit into my pocket! Chonx did the make-up (Bravo! Bravo!) while I did the hair (well, only Moes, Kay was very self-supporting). I helped the models change into the clothes we pulled out in Promod, added sipit and masking tape wherever it is needed. I pulled out bangles, necklaces, earrings from the accessories stash I brought with me and matched it with the whole outfit. Para din akong sales lady sa SM ha, I helped them put on their shoe (Although both Moe and Kay were such darlings, they were reluctant to what I was doing). During Moes first shot, I even held the reflector! And for the next couple of shots, I was standing behind the photographer, tissue in hand, making punas the models pawis in between shots (or in Moes case, the water splash on her face after the hilamos shot), re-applying powder on their noo so it wont be shiny in the pictures, fixing the bagsak on the dress when I feel like it doesnt translate well in the camera and advising the models what to do with their hands or how they should feel (in Moes hilamos shot we were kidding around that she should feel like Marian Rivera na pag gising, Byutipuuul or in her umbrella shoot, we were joking around telling her shes a tiger and I kept on telling Kay Tyras ever-famous, smile with your eyes).
It was a wrap around 1 pm (our call time was 8am). We were all sweaty na and my eyes were so puffy na (I died when I woke up before 6am!). The models ate in between the shots but all the behind-the-scenes crew were starving! I remember Doddie kept on saying, Porkchop, porkchoooop! in between shots because talaga, during times like these, we all just wanted to finish everything muna before we eat. I think nalipasan na nga din ako ng gutom at one point. I guess, I got bloated from the endless mineral bottles I was gulping whatever chance I can get. We ate almost 2pm na and grabe, all the T-bone steak we ordered were sagad na talaga hanggang buto at lahat ng kanin, ubos! We went home around 3pm na and when I got home, I went straight to bed, as in bagsak! I woke up around 7 pm and I really thought I was paralyzed! My legs were hurting so bad and my eyes were like punched by Manny Pacquiao!
Have you ever wondered while Rachel Zoe looks like that but she never gave up on her job? Well, if you love fashion and you have the eye and the appreciation for all things wonderful, you will never leave being a stylist. I swear, Ive never been so tired my entire life (not even from being stoked in surfing!) but Ive never been so fulfilled and so happy din talaga! Even when you put on the clothes to the model pa lang and they say that they love the clothes you picked, where can they buy it or even when they say, Thanks Dang when you make punas their pawis, it is fulfilling na e. Especially when your boss tells you din that shes so happy with the model you got and the shots made. More so when you see the pictures na and I cant wait na din for the magazine to get published!
I was first a model. All I did was make kuyakoy while waiting for my turn to pose. I had severe back ache back then from posing and I thought I could just die from tiredness. But I am now a stylist and although walang kapantay ang haggardness and I am not the center-of-attention anymore, I appreciate it now more than ever. Nag-give up na din kc ako sa thought na Ill be a model, I know I am tall but I am not lanky and Ill never be a size 0, tanggap ko na un. Haha!
Abby always tells me, Find something you are passionate about to make opportunities for yourself. Well, I think I just did =) =) =)
