Happy New Year!

If you can't tell by now...I love harassing the dog.

2011

Happy New Year!

In 2011 I have goals. Not many, but what I think are pretty big goals and I will focus most of my attention in 2011 on achieving those goals. I remember back when I had to make a five year plan for one of my undergrad courses. Five years later I took a look at it and realized that I accomplished everything on the plan in the time I specified. I haven't made a plan since and because of that I feel like I have just been wandering aimlessly through life. So I made some goals (not resolutions) for 2011:
1. Sit down with my hubby and create a 10 year plan
2. Sell our current home and purchase a  new one (and larger one)
3. Payoff my car (#TeamNoCarNote)
4. Obtain a job that utilizes both my undergrad and graduate degree.

I make goals because I feel that resolutions are like rules - they are made to be broken. Think about it, what is a/are some goals you want to accomplish in 2011?

Go to Jail. Go Directly to Jail!

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A Volusia County woman was arrested after several 911 calls were made complaining about a bad manicure.

The Volusia County Sheriffs Office says on Sunday Cynthia Colston, 44, from Deltona, was fighting with her nail technician at Central Nails on Elkcam Boulevard in Deltona because she apparently didnt like the length of her nails.

Woman arrested for calling 911 to complain about manicure: MyFoxORLANDO.com

During the fight the nail technician was slightly injured but it was Colston who called Volusia County Sherriffs deputies to the salon. Investigators say while one deputy was inside trying to settle the dispute over payment, Colston was calling 911 again, for the fourth time. She called two times after her original 911 asking when deputies would arrive. With no emergency, and a deputy already on the scene, Colson was arrested and charged with misuse of the wireless 911 system and taken to the Volusia County Branch County Jail in Daytona Beach.

See Miss C. in action here.

Thanks Marc

Product Review: Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose

Ingredients: Coconut Fatty Acid Cream Base, Organic Aloe Vera, Organic Shea Butter, Wheat Germ Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Organic Rosa Mosqueta Rose Hip Seed Oil; Extracts of Fennel, Hops, Balm Mint, Mistletoe, Camomile, Yarrow, Chrysanthemum, Angelica, Forsythia and Magnolia; Honeysuckle Oil, Carrot Oil, Aubreys Preservative (Citrus Seed Extract, Vitamins A, C and E).

They Say: For Dry, Brittle Hair  The sweet smell of success for your hair. Trade those dry, thirsty tresses for vibrant, touchably soft hair with this moisture-intensive conditioner. Restorative herbal emollients detangle and rehydrate to leave hair ultra-silky and irresistibly fragrant. Also recommended for bleached or highlighted hair. [source]

I Say: The smell was nice and it left a pleasant scent on my hair. However, it was a fight getting the product out of the bottle. Maybe it would be better packaged in a jar or an easier to squeeze bottle. Before purchasing I read a ton of rave reviews about the product so I was ready to be "wowed." But, I wasn't. This conditioner did not give me amazingly great results. The moisture factor was just okay and there was very little slip with this product. I purchased this conditioner because I was looking for an all natural/mostly natural hair conditioner. AOHR is not the one for me and I do not plan on purchasing this product again.

how was your Christmas lovelies? i hope y'all had a MERRY christmas :)
as for me, all i can say is canada is not as festive as the philippines but i'm still blessed cos my sister is out of the hospital already (just in time for christmas eve) and i was able to spend some time with people who i love :) i had a great christmas eve breakky at denny's and a sumptuous christmas eve dinner at auntie sally's house :)

boxing day is definitely more eventful than christmas (i just had a keeping up with the kardashians, kendra and SATC marathon the whole day). i woke up as early as 6 am to line up at best buy to get the christmas gift i'm giving myself...a new SLR camera!!! i was crossing my fingers that i wasn't late cos i didn't know that people actually take boxing day seriously and there are only 20 pieces of the camera (each store) i was hoping to get. so i stood in line until my turn came and ta-dahhhh, my christmas is merry!!!! i got the canon rebel T1i for just $610 when it would actually really cost $900+ regularly. SCORE!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)

i maxed out my budget so all i had left to spend was $25 at H&M. i got a cutesy top (on sale for $5) and this poncho. i've been dying to get one ever since i can remember and it's just the perfect time and perfect fit...for just $20 (regular price $40)!!!

ended my day with steak dinner at applebee's and some drinks at a pub downtown...and of course, some outfit posts wearing my new poncho and using my new cam (which i'm still trying to figure out how to use, as of press time)! merry christmas, indeed :) :) :)

P.S.
so sorry if i haven't been visiting your blogs lately. bear with me and my busy life.

Huetiful Hair Steamer

This is not a full review - just a recap of my first experience.

[Source]

I got the Huetiful Hair Steamer for Christmas and couldn't wait to use it. For my first steaming with the yarn braids I oiled my scalp lightly with Castor Oil (a humectant) and then sat under the steamer for 15-20 minutes.

It felt great! My scalp felt like little fingers were crawling all over my scalp and giving me mini massages in each area; also, my scalp/yarn did not feel overly damp after steaming. It felt so nice that I want to try and steam at least twice a week. The only downside was that I was unable to the steam to really focus on the back/nape area of my scalp. Part of the reason was due to the thickness of my braids. I am going to play around with adjust the level of my chair and steamer next time to see if that makes a difference.

Regarding this latest debacle.....

Things have sunk to a sorry state here at THHOF and I for one am appalled. Client's hair being burned straight off their scalps, careers being destroyed by the undisciplined meanderings of staff! Illicit drugs being distributed! I don't know why the board hasn't taken steps to shut us down! Seems we need to reconnect with some of our basics, revisit the nuts and bolts of everyday salon life.

I perused our text book and found a few items I feel need reexamination. Remember that we are not only responsible for the hair of our clients, but also for other, less hirsute regions as well.

REMEMBER
One must always maintain a, "Yes, I am too fabulous for you" attitude, not unlike the pose a sad queen might strike in a dark bar.

NOTE

Yet with shagging, the tool is rarely parallel.

Hair Drama

It all started last Tuesday....

My long-time client, actress Evelyn Brent, came in for her weekly appointment.  She said she wanted an overhaul and that she'd like to have a perm.  "No problem", I chirped.  She's a great tipper anyway, and I knew this was going to get me some extra Christmas money.  So I get her wrapped and under the perm machine and then I go back to the break room for a cigarette.

There sits Donna Lethal staring at the push broom, giggling.  So I go, "Hey" and she says, "I have a present for you.  Close your eyes and open your mouth."  Well she makes this amazing fudge every year so I'm thinking, 'cool'.  I close my eyes and open my mouth and she throws this pill so far into the back of my throat, that I immediately swallow it.

"Merry Christmas" she purrs and starts to leave.  She gets to the door and turns around, and with a look of complete awe says, "You're really beautiful."  She glides around the corner.  Just as I was musing about just what substance she was on, the next thing I knew, time and my mind were locked in a race to see which could bend the furthest.

With my next lucid thought, I glanced at the wall clock and realized that 3 hours had passed.  Shit-Evelyn!  I ran out and got her unhooked from the machine, had her washed, and put her in my chair with her back to the mirror.  For the next 45 minutes I put every product in the shop on her hair and worked my ass off and finally got it looking pretty good.  She gave me a wad of cash and a kiss on the cheek and left.  Whew, I thought, that was a close one!

So Thursday in comes Joan Blondell.  She had seen Evelyn the day before and now she wants a perm.  (clearly Evelyn hadn't washed all the product out of her hair yet)  "Fab idea doll!  Follow me," I said.  I took her back, prepped her and got her under the machine and brought her a telephone.

As I started to head for the break room, Donna caught my eye and gave me the high sign.  'Oh no you don't' I thought and decided I'd be better served if I just straightened  and restocked the product shelves instead.  Just as I was putting out the last New Year's Eve tiara, I heard this blood curdling high pitched screech.  It was TJB, one hand on his pearls the other over his heart.  I wheeled around to the direction of his stare, and there was Evelyn:

She was completely out of her mind screaming, "You!  You've ruined my hair!  Ruined my Career!!  RUINED MY LIFE!!!"

All of this in front of Joan.

Before I could do anything to stop them, they had both managed to unhook Joan and the ran out of the place.

I turned around and everyone in the salon was staring at me.  Except for Donna Lethal who was nowhere to be seen......

Fall/Winter 2010 - Week 8

Most of this week was spent installing my very first set of yarn braids. They are posted in the blog entry just before this one. I am loving them and I am already planning on doing them again. I want to leave them in for about a month so that means I will be setting aside a weekend at the end of January to take them out.

Sunday
My hair was in a bun from my Saturday wash. I decided that evening to start on the yarn braids. I separated my hair into sections and started braiding in the back. I moisturized each section of hair with leave-in conditioner before starting the braid. I braided from 6pm-11pm.

Monday-Tuesday
My braids were not complete so I wore a hat during the day. I braided from 7pm-11pm each night.

Wednesday
I was determined to finish braiding. I started around 5pm and braided until 3:30am. I believe the reason that the yarn braids took so long for me to install was because I had no idea what I was doing and this was my first time doing braids with something other than my own hair.

Thursday-Saturday
Anytime that my scalp felt a little dry I would spray some Aloe Gro onto my scalp. It's so cool and refreshing that I started spraying just for the feeling (lol). I got a Huetiful Hair Steamer for Christmas and since I can't wait to use it I will be sitting under it in my braids really soon (review coming).

Yarn Braids? Yes!

I have seen on YouTube and read a lot on the the blogs about a protective braid style known by many as "yarn braids" or "genie locs." Since I now have some free time back in my life I decided to give them a try. Another reason that the timing to try them out was perfect was because the last two weeks of the year are causal days at my job and if I didn't like them I could easily throw on a hat. (Natural hair and hats - I love the combination).

Some of the tutorials I watched on YT to learn how to do yarn braids are here, here, and here.
A blog that I found extremely helpful is here.

I did learn a few things with the braids:
Braiding in small sections gives better results. Larger sections results in a lot of space and a lot of  visible scalp.
Don't braid too tight or close to the edges. I had about 10 braids that I did a little to tight for my liking.
Moisturize each section before braiding. The last thing you want with a protective style is breakage. Handling dry hair too roughly will lead to breakage.
TIME. Putting in yarn braids so that they look good, takes t - i - m - e!!
A spray bottle filled with your favorite moisturizer is great for daily moisturizing.

Thoughts?
I love the outcome! This is definitely something that I will do again. When time allows and I am looking forward to trying out some styles with the braids.

If you have tried yarn braids, do you have any tips that you would like to share?
